PIPA, CHINESE LUTE. A classical Chinese instrument that has been played there since the 6th century, it is heavily constructed, with the body cut out of a single piece of timber like the earliest Chinese zithers. GUZHENG, CHINESE ZITHER. As a longtime harp player, it's delightful how much of the technique transfers between those two instruments. But the guzheng has special charms of its own with its deeply resonant basses, and the treble's ability to duplicate the sound of a delicate rainstorm. Absolutely beguiling to play!
